Doesn't the OED also cite it as a mop for cleaning a cannon, in the words of the late H. Allen Smith -- where I learned the word as an adolescent? Goes in the bore, I gather, and the term was 17th-18th century.

...but maybe that's just what the higher class of soldier used them for? The more urbane guerillas?
