The Classics--Movies

I have made a real effort to see to it that SonofV is schooled in the classics. To this end, the top shelf of our dvd collection (well most of the second shelf too) has some of my favorite titles.

2. Kill Bill parts one and two
3. The Blues Brothers
4. Caddyshack
5. The Pink Panther
6. The Beatles Yellow Submarine
7. Ghostbusters
8. The Gods Must Be Crazy
9. Beetlejuice
10. Airplane!
11. Blade Runner
12. 2001 A Space Odyssey

there are more....

I'd be interested in what you'd include as "must see" movies for the youth of today.

I've seen 5 of those.

Our kids love Yellow Sub, I have not seen it.

For British Kids, monty Python is essential. I'd also recommend it for American kids whose parents get it.

Um.... Star Wars...?

Airplane is a must.

We don't tend to buy movies, though. just borrow or stream. We do now have the StarWars and Harry potters.

Alien Aliens etc....but not really for the youngsters

Dirty Dancing. It's more than just dancing -for me it was very instructional about the politics and morality of the era

All the movies I have as must-sees are R rated, though, and some for reasons I agree with.

Good Morning Vietnam is an all time favorite. But I my kids aren't ready to deal with people talking about blowjobs while their parents are in the room. I'm pretty sure only one of them is likely to know what one is and they'd die of embarrasment to hear jokes about it while I was there.

I second Casablanca.
Definitely do not put It on the list or Pet Semetary. Maybe when they're 16 or 17, but not before. Shit, I can't watch Pet Semetary now, the Youtube clips are all I need to feel fucked up.
Its strange, we did not have a ton of memorable movies we watched as kids. Of course my parents would not let us watch R rated stuff for a long time.

Captains Courageous, with Spencer Tracy. Great for anyone, but I think especially good for kids.

Inherit the Wind (for older kids, and do you see I have a thing for Spencer Tracy?)

I can't agree enough re: To Kill a Mockingbird.

My nephew, now 20, was a Monty Python fan as a kid (still is) due in large part to me lending him my Monty Python computer game CD.

Caddyshack and Stripes are just timeless freaking classics!

The American President - Annette Benning is charming and the writing is wonderful.

It does, however, lean left. So YMMV.

And I forgive you.

So, I met a guy for the first time and everything was AWESOME and somehow the conversation went to movies and he said he didn't think Dirty Dancing was all that bad and I (for dramatic effect) fell to the floor yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" pounding on the floor with my hands.

It was funny.

But I'm a non-girl in areas like DD and Ghost.
And Titanic.

That isn't to say it's a bad movie, really. Just...something about it that turned me the wrong way. And that is just one person's humble opinion.
