Having a string dragging behind may be like a drogue anchor acting somewhat like a rudder, explaining why they don't just go round and round in a circles will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?

I remember as a kid having one of those cheap inflatable rafts and trying to paddle it with a single canoe paddle. That was possible, but very hard. You spun much more than you went forward.
