Big V, that sounds a lot like the clutch plate in my Corolla. Some are adjustable, mine wasn't. I'm told the change-over job is not too hard, but I upgraded to the Subaru* so I don't know.
I had to develop a technique where I mesh the gears, then let the clutch settle, then accelerate. * ETA: then had to get the clutch on the Subi fixed... hmmmmm.
