Facebook divides, because we only interact in short snippets with people we mostly already know. The relationships we've already formed in that regard can only be spoiled and cause us discomfort.
A format like the Cellar, on the other hand, unites, precisely because we are exposed to people we don't know, who are given a chance to discuss their beliefs in a longer format. And if it turns out we still hate some of those folks after all, there's no net loss to our social comfort because we never knew/liked them to begin with. |
