They lose the progressive left and working class whites by maintaining the status quo. The Republicans are pretty fluid, become anti-trade, anti-immigration, and all over the place on other issues. They pick up white working class folks but lose their intellectuals and their moderates. There was a time you could find a moderate Republican with good government credentials. GHW Bush would seem to be the last sensible Republican. It'll be fun to see what happens.
