It's every man for himself at this junction.
Looking in your mirror and signalling before making a lane change immediately singles you out as 'a stranger in these parts' and such weaknesses will be exploited mercilessly by the more frequent user.
If you get stuck in the wrong lane, you could be destined to haunt the place for all eternity.

I've seen this roundabout in Swindon a lot on the interweb:

Aaargh! The Swindon 'Magic Roundabout'. Abandon hope all ye who enter here.

There's a similar junction at Hemel Hempstead which I'm more familiar with, that has also acquired the 'Magic Roundabout' title.

Constructed in 1973, the "Magic Roundabout" in Hemel Hempstead was voted the UK's second-worst roundabout in a 2005 poll held by an insurance company (the winner being its Swindon counterpart).

In fairness, these junctions can work pretty well as long as everyone obeys the rules. Some individuals are prone to using their own rules which seem to be made up on the spot and that's when problems occur.

Incidentally, the 'Magic Roundabout' title was borrowed from a children's animated TV programme. It was a bit of a bizarre production to say the least.
