Sorry for your vacation situation, but this is just a random thought:
What if, what if a new kind of vacation became popular. Ease the guilt of visiting catastrophe-stricken, beautiful areas, by signing up for a Volunteerism Vacation. Like a "package deal" type setup, where a non-profit organization sets you up with modest accommodations, sets up some volunteer activities and shuttles you to the site, and also gives you plenty of personal time for chilling on the beach, etc. Forego all the pageantry and pomp of the 'fancy hotel' and drowsy buffet browsing, instead --take a break from your desk job by putting on some work boots and getting a whole-body workout. Brag to your friends about the "charity work" you took time off for!
