The phrase is also used in a derogatory sense when referring to a person's lack of common sense. To say "His amp goes up to eleven" is to imply that regardless of the extent to which you explain or "dumb down" a seemingly simple concept to someone, that person will never be capable of understanding.

I took one of those stupid online IQ tests years ago, and then again the next day, while the kids were home. Guess what? Kids do lower your IQ!

Thank you. I apologize for the doxy bit. I was trying to be clever and I think it crossed the line. You are an amazing woman and a survivor, and that is what is really important, using your IQ to keep going forward.

I was told, after taking the IQ test in 8th grade, that mine was 150.

I didn't believe it then, and I still don't. That's ridiculous.

Scoring high on an IQ test just means you are very good at taking IQ tests. Whoo-hoo, I haz skillz!

I agree. I never did become a rocket scientist as I was told I was ideal for after taking a Differential Aptitude Test (in whatever grade we took those.)

Though obviously there is SOME relation to intelligence, some people are just really good at taking tests (whether it be multiple choice, T/F, or essay.) That skill got me through 4 years of college, because I sure didn't study.

don't worry, Jinxie, I'm sure I'll get insane and emotional over something one of these days.
