1/2/2004: Manatee calves

Happy Friday! What you got there is the result of the world's very first birth of twin manatees, in captivity.

Or sea cows. Manatees are also known as sea cows. (I wouldn't riff on this, because comic Jim Gaffigan has already done the definitive manatee/sea cow bit.)

The birth happened at a French zoo, and the official story notes that "Sea-going species of the smooth, cylindrical-looking animals, which have a paddle-like tail, were believed to have inspired the tales of mermaids among ancient sailors."

Uh-huh.
