Forum Design Patterns

In Software Engineering and other disciplines there are papers, articles and books on Design Patterns. Here we propose an initial set of Forum Design Patterns modeled after recent events at The Cellar.

Forum Design Patterns
(1) Lump and Censor
(2) Poke and Bash
(3) Ambush and Ban

This is only the beginning of the list. I'm sure if we all contribute to this effort, we can create a bestselling book and retire to book signings at Borders stores.

---
(1) Lump and Censor
---
Don't discriminate between different posters' writings. Label a group of them and shut them up right away. Strut your testestorone with as few words as possible.

From the School of Speak Boldy and Carry a Big Stick. Push someone's button, wait for their response, then crack them over the head.

Quote:
Good morning, time for your daily reality check.
He didn't miss you last night. He didn't even think about you.
Carry on.
Quote:
Oh, I know, I know...I've been licking my wounds all night--and, this morning. I don't know who I hate more-him or me. The urge to fuck up his life is raising it's ugly head. I want to call him and tell him off. Not that he'd care.
Quote:
Dude. get over it. You can't fuck up his life. There's nothing you could do that would remotely affect him one way or the other (there's assault and murder, but that's counterproductive). Make him as much of a non-entity in your mind as you are in his. Rejoin humanity and stop wallowing in dog shit.

You're afraid of feeling nothing, aren't you? Well, you're going to have to, at least for awhile. Suck it up, do it. End of story.

I'm quickly running out of empathy here. How many times can someone walk up to you and say "Look, I hit myself in the head with a hammer" and you stop feeling sorry for them?

end. it.

(3) Ambush and Ban
---

This is where someone starts a thread to bash and provoke somone. The target defends themselves, then several known combants join in the ambush, pig fighting ensues, and the target is banned. In many cases, the ban is temporary, known cases vary between 8 months and 4 days.

Anyone that posts in large red font should immediately get the axe. UT, you are right, if someone gets so angry as to ask for banning, you gotta do it.

I like idea of an anonymous forum where the weight of each individual idea must stand.

Do you mean like where nobody has a user name, and you don't know who posted what?

@wolf: Yes, but of course you would need to estabish some sense of community first, or who cares, right? So maybe you take an existing community and build an anonymous board within that site where you must have a valid username to post, but it doesn't display.

Then again, it could just degrade into a flame-war board. But my vision is that it could be used to further elevate people above the superficial qualities and assumptions that seperate us, even further than the internet currently does.

Back in the day, with different software, The Cellar had an anonymous board. No matter what you posted the user name always showed as Anonymous. I don't think that's possible with vB.

Do you think you could read a post by TW or Urbane guerrilla and not know who posted it?

I've been on boards with anon for user IDs. They devlove rapidly into cesspools of invective. (they may improve after I leave them though )

As it is, I am just beginning to think I understand "sock puppets" but don't know the etymology of the term, and have only the vaguest of ideas what barak and joscher refer to.

We do just fine with that by posting under our own names here.

I have never noticed a hesitation on a dwellar's part to call a motherfucking asshole a spade.

Can anyone tell me how this request for information contributed to the "pigfighting"? I just wanted to read what happened. I'm pretty sure my subsequent posts were against the ban, in general.

Please don't quote my posts out of context. You'll be wrong every time, man.

Sorry, I didn't intend your question to be part of the problem at all. It was just part of the setup. It's like a "Man walks into a bar" story, usually the bartender is an innocent bystander. I should have trimmed it out. Again, sorry, Elspode.

@Flint.....

that was partly the reasoning behind the creation of 'jerry_cornelius' on the AG board..... and you know how badly that turned out!
