Cape Lookout, North Carolina
Below are some pics from my recent trip to Cape Lookout, North Carolina.
Enjoy. APPROACHING CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE COMPLEX ON THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: LIGHTHOUSE; LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER'S QUARTERS; OIL HOUSE CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHT HOUSE IS THE ONLY LIGHTHOUSE IN THE U.S. WITH A DIAMOND PATTERN THE OIL HOUSE WAS USED TO STORE BARRELS OF OIL FOR THE LAMP IN THE LIGHTHOUSE THIS IS THE KEEPER'S QUARTERS; NOTE THE CONDUIT FROM THE RAIN GUTTER TO THE CISTERN ALMOST ALL COMPLEXES LIKE THIS HAD TO STORE THEIR RAINWATER THE LIGHTHOUSE IS OPENED ONLY 4 DAYS A YEAR UNTIL WE REINFORCE THIS OLD IRON STAIRWAY HERE'S A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE LIGHTHOUSE LOOKING OUT OVER A BARRIER ISLAND THIS LIGHTHOUSE USED TO HAVE A FRESNEL LENS; IT HAS SINCE BEEN ELECTRIFIED AND AUTOMATED LIGHTHOUSE COMPLEXES OFTEN HAD SMALL HOMES FOR VARIOUS WORKERS; HERE'S ONE WE STABILIZED AND MOTHBALLED THIS IS A U.S. LIFE SAVING SERVICE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING; IT'S IN ROUGH SHAPE BUT IT'S A COOL BUILDING

Keeper
Not many of those left since the Coast Guard has automated all their lighthouses. It sounds romantic, but I've heard some pretty sad stories about the life of lighthouse keepers and their families. Isolation, lonliness, etc. I'll spare you the details of some of the more tragic stories.
I'm glad you liked the pics, bri. I have to pinch myself sometimes when I realize I get paid to go to these places. But 80% of my job is entering data into a computer.
