Definition of a Bastard

Most people naturally avoid hurting others, if for no other reason than because of the natural empathy felt between humans: hurting others causes some hurt for yourself as well. The bastard doesn't face this hurdle, as he is completely miserable to begin with. Whatever hurt he may feel, from hurting you, is a drop in the bucket compared to the baseline misery of his existence.

This is the magic bullet of the bastard, the key to his effectiveness. He is, essentially, psychologically invincible, because you can't mess him up any worse than he already is. He is glad to do it for you, if a little of the harm falls your way as well.

I disagree with that statement and think it should read.....

Most people naturally avoid hurting others like themselves, if for no other reason than because of the natural empathy felt between humans that they have something in common with.
I say this because of observing people being rather quick to zero in on anyone different, odd or strange, and being human seems to have low priority.

How do you know I wasn't just describing an undesirable aspect of my own psyche?

In French a 'bātard' ( exact translation of 'bastard') is , amongst other things , a type of loaf based on a blend of different flours .

Respectable coiffed ladies go to the boulangerie every day to ask for a bastard .
