Lottery jackpot swells to $300-million (U.S.)

So, the purpose of this thread is to get some ideas what could, or should, or would be done with the money, if one of us wins the Big Game Lottery!

Any good ideas?

I was over in NJ last night buying a few tix. In fact, I apparently missed being on TV by an hour or so, as our NBC affiliate in Philadelphia was over at the place where I bought my tix (a liquor store in Pennsauken, NJ).

I did the same thing with the Powerball jackpot late last year, when I drove down to Claymont, DE to buy tix. Fortunately, PA joins Powerball next month...and NJ is only 10-15 minutes from me.

The first thing I would do if I won that money is talk to an accountant or investment representative. I would go with the lump sum, which should be around $100 million. If invested properly, I'd probably make that $100 million turn back into $300 million and then some in the end.

Once the finances are set, I would pay off all my debts, then Rho's debts, then my parents' house. That wouldn't take much. Then, I'd buy myself a new car...a nice car. No Ferraris or Lamborghinis. Probably the most expensive car I would buy is a Cadillac STS. Then, a new car for Rho.

As far as a million dollar mansion...hmmm. Not sure what I would want to do as far as a house. Maybe a nice 3-story house in Chicago's Wicker Park. Or, my dream home near the Maryland shore. Nothing overly ludicrious.

I would then hop in the car and drive. All over the US and Canada...for several months. That's my current dream sequence.

I WOULD quit my job...primarily to go back to school for my masters degree...probably in Social Work, then my doctorate. And then go to work doing something truly rewarding to me personally...and hopefully helping others in the process.

Sure, the odds are 76 million to one. It's not like I'm really hurting myself, other than wasting a dollar and some gas driving over to New Jersey. Plus, it's fun to dream. Meanwhile, I'll try to make my dreams possible through hard work.

I'd need some time to figure out what's next. And I'd want to get away to think about it. Not alone at an exclusive retreat, but in an environment where others with money are concentrated, with privacy and security.

So, I'd buy a home aboard Residensea, which has its maiden voyage this year, where I could combine a trip around the world with an exposure to people with money and the freedom to do what they want.

I'm sure that I'd see the good and bad associated with economic wealth.

While travelling in that environment, I might be exposed to new opportunities, and people one can't meet on the street.

I was having a conversation with one of the dialysis nurses last Friday about this very topic. She said that she knew a guy who hit the lottery (not the BIG jackpot, but for like five grand). She said that he suggested for anyone who wins ANY amount of money to hire a lawyer.

Heck, with 300 million, buy both!

*sigh* With that kind of money, I'd FINALLY get my dream photography studio up and running. There was a time that I dreamt of traveling all over the world, but IMO, it's just not safe anymore (especially for Americans).

The old line I've heard, from both a dairyman and lobsterman is "I think I'd just keep on milking (fishing) until its all gone, should take about three years."

Older low income couple down the road here hit for something like $200K a while ago. They definitely need some lawyering because of the healthcare implications.

Wink I bought mine

I live in VA, which participates in this lottery. The total is about 325 mil right now.

My dream is to pay off my debts, including the new ones (house in the mountains, new SUV, biggest, baddest most luxurious RV on the planet) and tow that SUV all over the country.

Stop when I want, shop where I want for whatever I want.

Hire a temp to sit in an office and field calls from charities and newly discovered relatives and tell them "I'll call them right back." Someday.

Really retire once I've seen it all before I get too weak to enjoy it all.

Oh yeah, charter a P-51 for a three-hour tour. I rode in one once before and I wanna do it again!

Dreamin'.....

Brian

I saw a pic of one of the three winners today -- 20 year-old female warehouse worker in GA. Pretty darn cute, too. I guess she won't have any troubles finding a man if she ever did before.
Can you imagine winning that much money at such an early age? She probably knows the value of a dollar (otherwise she might not be working in a warehouse), thus might not blow all the cash on a nice pair of shoes or a bitchin' auto. But to never have to even think of money again is something that I would like to experience -- even if it is something "they" say isn't all it's cracked up to be.
