Very cool, and may I just note that the western style of food is winning in all civilized nations. Coke, frozen foods, processed foods, brand names. Congratulations, world, soon you too will be obese like me and us.

Somewhere I read that Portugal has the highest per capita fat consumption,
owing to items such as a steak with a fried egg on top of it, for breakfast.

I notice how many more fresh fruits and veggies most of them have, compared to the pics from the US, but as UT pointed out the chips are sneaking in everywhere. Well, except in Chad.

I thoroughly dig the Melander's Beer Budget.

I think they were the only family that saw to that particular staple. I have vague recall of a German ad, probably their equivalent of "Guiness is good for you" ... "the bread that you can drink."

It was also interesting to see the number of households that had a big ol' box of Corn Flakes sitting on the table.

Sure there were. They'll fry up some of the beetles that we crawling through the shot later for a tasty snack to munch on while they're watching the nightly rapes and beatings in their refugee camp.

Fascinating.

I'm going to go and live with the Melanders in Germany. They're the only ones who have enough booze. Good old Krauts - they know their beer

Holey frickin tooth decay re the amount of Coke drunk by the Casales family from Mexico though. Bleurgh.

And of course an honourable mention for Aboubakar family of Breidjing Camp. Poignant without being patronising. It reminds me that people in difficult situations are still people after all. I can't say "There but for the grace of God.." because I don't believe in God, but I am aware that humanity plays the hand it's dealt with as much dignity as possible and it's humbling.

this time I actually clicked on the photo essay itself. Fascinating! I wish they had put the country though--a bunch of places I've never heard of.

It might be the way it's shown on your screen, but it does show the country on mine - before the name, in bold?
