Write the future you a letter/email
I had the idea to have my kids write themselves a letter to be opened at some future date as a school project. Then it occurred to me that a website that did emails this way might be a way to make money at it.....
so, as is true of every idea i get like this.....it's already being done. I googled and found FutureMe.org This is a very simple blank sheet of paper type of email with a delivery date and a place to put your email. I thought maybe having a questionnaire or two or some templates available would be the way to do it....

You know, I did this once...I have a vague recollection what it was about, but I don't remember the details. I can't wait to get my email!

Dear Steve,
Don't be such a self-righteous know-it-all about that decision I made. It seemed like a good idea at the time based on the information I had. Love, Steve |

I'm going to send myself an email to be opened in the future and then add myself to my blocked senders list; because, I've moved on.

What if you have multiple personality disorder? Which personality should do the writing and which should be the recipient? Or should all of us write to just one personality? Maybe only one personality should do all the writing. What if I get cured and the personality I wrote to no longer exists? Should I open the letter anyway? Please advise - Sleepless in the Four Corners

That was a great letter, LJ. I like that chick.
There was another one I read, that I didn't think to save the link to, where the girl had chosen to write it to her current boyfriend instead of herself. And you could just tell from the general tone and maturity level that there's absolutely no way she'll still be dating this dude two years from now. Long after he and this chick have split up, and he's had like five girlfriends since then, he's gonna open this random email and things are gonna be awwwwwkwaarrrrd. |

Dear Future me.
I know you'll forget where you put this 'future me note' so I though I'd be clever and I've include a reminder of where you can find it. ps. Also please remember to take your memory vitamins. joke |

When I was a sprog, we only worried about what the future us would think of us when we had our photos taken -must look good- and that was stressful enough.
Occasionally, we buried time capsules, but usually not very personal ones. Now... so much more. This and every other one of my posts will probably be avaialable to future me and my descendants. Do I need to write me a letter? No. I'm pretty open about me and my hopes for the future (such as they are) here and elsewhere. I don't need to receive an email in the future reminding me of all the things i failed to achieve. Should I have my kids write themselves a letter? It sounds like a great idea, but I think only as a never-to-actually-be-recieved thing. Or a 50 year project. Kids (well mine anyway) have unrealistically high expectations of themselves, the really don't need reminding that they didn't/won't realize all of their dreams as a vulnerable young adult.

It's a good idea, though. I might write a real one on FutureMe when I've had a think...
On the flip side - there's a book out at the mo called Dear Me: Letter to my 16 Year Old Self (Amazon link). British names, so might not interest everyone on here. But I might ask for it for Christmas. Not because there's a certain Torchwood actor in it or anything. No. Well, there was this wonderful quote from Julian Clary as well, "It's hard to swallow, but in a few years time you will swan around in black rubber consuming men like After Eight Mints."
