Wow, I didn't know there were curfews for anyone in the US. Seems a bit regimented to say the least.
I hope it helps the situation though. What does a curfew mean to young people with jobs that don't finish till after 9pm?

I think most places in the US have curfews for kids...on very rare occasions, they're implemented for everyone during emergencies.
Generally, those with jobs are exempt so long as they're head home or to the job. I got pulled over a couple of times when I was a teenager and was let go because I was headed home from work. |

Really? That's interesting. I can't imagine it would be policed all that much though surely? The cops must have better things to do.

We have a 10:00 pm curfew for juveniles. Works great and really helps alcohol & drug offenses

Well, I was sort of thinking it goes against the whole 'free country' thing. I keep thinking of police states when I think of curfews.

we've never been free. we've always had laws to protect society as a whole by punishing nonconformists

I suppose it depends on your definition of "free". I know we have laws that set limits on what we Americans can do. But a curfew seems like prior restraint, in direct opposition to the First Amendment to the Constitution. I like Gravdigr's description, very funny. If I drive, I understand a limit on my driving speed. But I have a hard time extending such an analogy to a curfew. Being outside my house, that's my right. And so is assembling with others outside my house. Rocks through the courthouse window--No. Snatching private property from sidewalk cafe tables--No. We already have laws that give law enforcement the means to apprehend criminals that do such things. I oppose the idea of a curfew. I believe a curfew punishes *me* for nonconformity, being outside my house, even though that is not a crime. I think they should only be applied in the most extreme circumstances.

This kind of shit is shitty...A curfew will only affect the legal, law-abiding folks. The people curfews are aimed at are not affected in the least. If you're the type that might go downtown and burn down the courthouse, what's gonna happen?
"Let's go burn down the courthouse." "No, we can't, it's after ten." "Fuck." Yeah, that ain't ever happened. Ever.

"Nah, lets just drink and throw a few rocks through the windows" A little later, on the way to the courthouse ... [siren] "What are you young lads doing out at 11.30 on a school night?" "Nuffin!" "Get in the cruiser, I'll take you home" At least, that's the idea. Zippy is probably close to the truth, but any kid (under 18) who is out that late OUGHT to be cheked out.

Philly has a 9 pm curfew... It was implemented last weekend, I believe it was in response to the flashmobs or threats of some such.

Philadelphia has been experiencing violent "flash mobs" since last year. Which means groups of teens have been getting together, apparently via social media, and wreaking havoc in the central business district and South Street area.
They have been pulling various stunts such as robbing stores en masse, running by and stealing items off of sidewalk cafe tables, and randomly attacking unsuspecting passers-by. It finally came to a head a couple of weeks ago when there were five attacks in one day. The mayor and police chief said, "enough," and announced the strict enforcement of the curfew. They received a lot of criticism, of course; mostly because the flash mobs generally happened in the afternoon and early evening--before curfew hours. But I think the main idea--besides a show of force--was to get parents to start paying attention to the whereabouts of their kids, regardless if they are "good" or not. |
