7 Billionth person to be born on Monday

Earth pop. now apx 7000000000

Many will wring their hands at this.

But here, at the Cellar, we watched that video from that dude;

That dude who showed how, once cultures advance a little, their lifespan goes way up and the number of kids in their families goes way down. From seven children per family to two children per family.

At one point the population curve looked like a J and many people projected that this was a disaster of tremendous proportions.

But at the same time, global fertility rates and the number of babies popping out started to fall:

Now they've realized that the curve is going to be more of an S than a J. It's not that the original population scientists were wrong with their science. It's that there were forces at work they hadn't anticipated.

Maybe there are forces that we don't understand. There may be human instincts to keep reproduction levels high enough to ensure the survival of the tribe. If life is hard, you need seven children to keep the it going. If life is easy, you only need two.

Also, the healthier they are, the more likely they are to have multiple births. Even after removing the influence of in vitro procedures, the rate has gone up relatively dramatically in just the last 100 years.

What if, in another 1000-2000 years, we're all having litters of 3-4 at a time, with gestation periods of 14 months?

Clod, mankind should have all the genetic stuff worked out by then, to produce whatever is best so... what would you women prefer to birth, four 3-pounders or two 6-pounders?

I would prefer that men birth them. Whatever the poundage.

It ain't just the birth, it's the next 18 years. Better to engineer a larger birthing canal in the first place. And of course, no one wants a worldwide "hotdog in a hallway" epidemic, so now we have to engineer bigger penises, too. But I hear that research has been well underway for decades, so it's alright.

I'm below 3,000,000,000. I didn't realize that you were so much younger than me.

You're still just a babe, babe.
