Surf Music

Do you like it? AND What makes it 'surf' music?

Surf Music?? I LOVE it! What makes it "surf music"? Well, like any category of music, there isn't a strict definition measurable to four decimal places, but... Lots of reverb, heavy reverb is common. Staccato guitar riffs. Lyrics, not so much. Dick Dale is the King of Surf Guitar--if he's playing it, it's Surf.

Discussion of the line "Then you'll never hear surf music again."

Dick Dale, Hellecasters, Ventures, SURF!!!

This is my favorite surf music track, Mr Moto by the Belairs. My roommate in college, Eej, he played surf music. He had a some friends who played with him, it would be an overstatement to call them a band, but we listened to a LOT of surf music.

Junior Brown rocks the surf music too. I especially like that acoustic stuff, thanks Jim.

Am I really lame and uninformed if I say: hello? Beach Boys?

To me, that was what started it all. But then comes along Pet Sounds and everyone takes notice. Sir Paul McCartney said he thought "God Only Knows" was one of the best songs ever written, and there was an album rivalry between the beaches and the beatles at the time, albeit one of mutual respect.

But I'm rambling.

Id post vid but I'm on my phone and it is too hard! Anyone?

Junior Brown is awesome. On the end of Sugar Foot Rag he goes into a few Hendrix riffs,

Now, with his sixth album, Down Home Chrome, he not only continues with his stylistic grab-bag of cars, country and characteristic humor, but also covers his idol with a note-perfect rendition of the Hendrix classic, “Foxy Lady.” “No one really should do Jimi songs … except Jimi,” he admits. “But I thought I was justified in doing just this one.”

Pipeline by the Chantays 0:00 to 2:50 (CLASSIC.)
Walk, Don't Run by the Ventures 2:51 to 5:03 (Classic. Come on.)
Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers 5:04 to 7:04 (That's the not the only one but the one I remember the most.)

Excellent!

Yes. Most definitely yes.

This is Miserlou, probably Dick Dale's most famous track. God bless Quentin Tarentino.

and by the way, the Beach Boys are legitimate Surf Music artists. Less in the instrumental way, but legit nonetheless.

I see what you're saying. And I'm on board with tarentino. More perfect tracks for that movie? Non-existent.
