Recommended routers, things to watch out for?

I'm (finally) going to be getting DSL and want to get a router so I can connect the 3 other computers I have to access the internet. I don't want to go wireless at this time. I'll be using Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Linux.

I would like to know what router you would recommend and if you have seen any problems with any programs getting access to the internet, even after setting up the router to allow that port to have access, and anything else that I should watch our for.

Don't get Linksys if you play games. If you don't, you'll probably be fine with them.

I sold my BEFSR41 and bought a Netgear RO318. It's been nothing but great.

Incidentally, my RO318 survived the fire, but my dad's BEFSR81 (the 8-port version of the BEFSR41), which was sitting right next to it, did not (smoke damage).

I personally have a D-Link DI-604. It's worked very well with no problems. I don't do much other than mail & web browsing, but when I have tried something else (like NetMeeting) I was always able to get it to work, sometimes by putting my computer in the DMZ. In my experience using stuff from D-Link, Netgear, and Linksys at work, D-Link stuff is good quality of technology and is relatively inexpensive for similar features, but has sketchy documentation.

Minimum 1 3/4 hp. You'll also want a table. Check out Woodworkers Warehouse.

Dave, mind elaborating on the "bad for games" angle?

My 3com works; I don't have any experience with alternatives to plug it over them.

It was causing a "connection interrupted" in Q3; I have read reports of various problems with other games too (Unreal Tournament, Diablo II Battle.Net, etc).

I sold mine and bought the Netgear.

Heya,

I have a netgear FR318 at home for my systems, and got a FR314 for my friends, who are HEAVY gamers.

No issues with using it for games from them. Considering how much they are into MMORPGs, this is a good thing.

However, the Netgear also works with VPN clients (outgoing), so I can use my laptop and desktop from home to do work.
