That's Racist! ???
Is this racist? Or clever? or just slightly more original than "Keep Calm and Detroit ON"....?
(for those who don't know, Detroit is over 80%Black/African American There is very little background information -it could be referring to the word using the accent on the E, or the city. Either way.... your thoughts/impressions?

What is Detroit with an accent on the e? Is it someone's last name?

Detroit was founded by the French (it means Strait as in the river}. people embracing/mocking the city's origins sometimes call it "Day-Twa".

I probably should have phrased that differently.
"Judgments are being made with very little background information"

I don't have an opinion about the shirts and don't understand them.

I tried the judgements thing at first ...
When something is proclaimed to be the new black, it means that the something is the new "in" thing. They could be saying that Detroit is the new in thing; but, they used the French spelling which is old and that didn't make sense unless they're members of a History club. If they were members of a French club, the whole thing would have been in French. That Détroit is French for strait has been covered in the Cellar before. Strait is a homonym for straight so it occurred that this might be a relationships activist message; but, the people wearing the shirts didn't look that clever. I decided it was something more off the wall that required local context so I Googled the phrase. After finding out it's a commercial slogan for a clothing store, I've concluded that their thoughts and prayers are with Paris, the fashion capital. TMI, my apologies. |

I agree, "___ is the new Black" has been used to death for what's now hip.
I wonder if the accent on the e is to make it copyrightable?
