Sunglasses

ZZ Top says...
When you get up in the morning and the light is hurt your head
The first thing you do when you get up out of bed
Is hit that street a-runnin' and try to meet the masses
And go get yourself some cheap sunglasses
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Now there's science to back that philosophy up.
Quote:
Science suggests that spending money on experiences and giving to others is money well spent. Spending on stuff doesn’t contribute to happiness, but a recent study adds a must-have to our wellbeing closet: sunglasses.

Sunglasses may make people look more intimidating, but new research shows that wearing shades dials down feelings of anger and aggression.

In a study entitled Sun-induced Frowning Fosters Aggressive Feelings, scientists measured the anger and aggression of random people walking into the sun with or without sunglasses. They found that anger and aggression scores were lower in those who wore shades.

By preventing squinting and scowling into the sun, sunglasses decrease negative emotion. This goes hand in hand with other studies that show how physical states affect emotions. We usually think of the mind affecting the body – this is the opposite. Instead of psychosomatic this is somatopsychic. For example, studies show smiling boosts happiness, good posture improves confidence, and Botox is thought to lessen depression by preventing frowning.
But remember wearing shades indoors or at night is only acceptable for a douche at the Jersey shore.

I've found myself being pissed off for no reason, being called on it, and then realizing that it was because I was walking into the sun with it beating down on me. I don't think I was wearing sunglasses.

I completely believe this article. It confirms my biases and I like it.

I've exercised somatopsychic effects on myself. When I lived in London I used to get really riled at the idiots that stop as soon as they've stepped off the escalator, or that stand right in front of the maps for extended periods trying to get their bearings. For a while I practised smiling at them (little short of bared teeth, to start with, and even if they weren't looking at me) and trying to admire their self-centre stupidity. After a while it seemed to work - I found myself marvelling at such remarkable displays of twattitude, instead of internally ripping their heads off.

That is absolutely the best way to react. Any amount of rage is just lost psychic energy. Just assume they are fellow passengers in this ridiculous world, and have made a tiny mistake they are unaware of.

Wise words easier said than done. But worth the effort

It's better than therapy.

Cheaper, anyway...

My prescription sunglasses made me very happy this year.
(except when one of the arms came off and I lost the screw)

So I agree with Glatt - it confirms my bias so I like it.
