Bag on Bill Bennett Here

Somebody had to start on the bugger. DeCoster makes a nice little connection in the linked article. Where did our beloved public servant get the money? I'm still waiting for Ashcroft's implosion...

What it speaks to is human nature: how the biggest moralists so often turn out to be the biggest offenders.

How else would they know what's good and bad for you without experimentation. Just like any scientist.

Yesterday, Shepps and I were discussing Bennett in relation to Santorum's recent comments. My guess: Santorum is shagging his sister.

We've been discussing this at work rather a lot lately.

I have it on the solemn assurance of several actual christians that there isn't a prohibition in the bible regarding gambling, per se.

I mean, yeah, there's that bit where the roman soldiers are gaming for jesus' garments, but that's about it.

There isn't a "Thou shalt not gamble" in the 10 commandments ...

(Yes, I totally think the situation is as amusing as hell, but I don't really see the problem, assuming that it was in fact HIS money.)

There's not a prohibition against drinking, either (Jesus did turn water into wine after all), nor against smoking. That doesn't stop some people from deciding that these activities are sinful (as opposed to simply unhealthy). Some churches go so far in their teetotalling as to serve grape juice for communion, even though at the last supper (which is the basis for communion) Jesus served wine.

Drinking and smoking are usually prohibited becuase people feel it's sinful to harm the body that God gave you. Do I agree with this? No I don't, but I can see their reasoning.

Drinking I really disagree with anyone saying it's a sin. For the very same reasons that Steve posted. Jesus drank, and he was the perfect man which meant he never sinned, so therefor the fact that some churches considered drinking a sin is incredibly stupid. But I think a lot of what churches do is incredibly stupid.

edit: I guess this has nothing to do with the topic at hand *shrug*

The bible never said anything about smoking weed or using other drugs either. I love how the one time Drug czar has got a gambling problem. The hypocricy of the religious moralizers make me ill.

I think all religions are simple, stupid, hogwash filled supersticions that thrive by brainwashing and manipulating their participants.

I cannot understand how any intelligent person can believe that they have a soul or that God is sitting up there somewhere listening.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with belief in a higher power, so long as you do not force it upon others.

Likewise for the moral belief systems that people construct around said higher powers.

But when someone with a restrictive religious belief system crusades long and loud about how _his_ morals are the standard by which _everyone_ should live their lives, he's painting a set of huge red target circles on his chest. And when he gets caught in broad daylight doing something that suggests his moral code is really "All vices are EVIL (except for those that I practice)," I reserve the right to laugh continuously until I lose voluntary bowel control.

Yeah, this is exactly the kind of guy I can't stand. He tells me what kind of morals I should have. Screw him.
This being said, I don't see why we're messing with him. Okay, he's a self-righteous bastard, but I haven't seen him quoted anywhere saying that gambling is bad. I understand there's some question as to where all that money came from, but if there's a case to make that he obtained it illegaly then make it. He says that it hasn't interfered with his home life, and I see no reason to doubt him since we haven't seen his wife bawling on TV about being a slot-widow or some such damn thing. Just guessing she's probably happy the guy's not home. So screw it.
The guy's a dick. Still no reason for this kind of attention.
