No more Redhat Linux

Apparently this happened a few days ago but I jus read about it today. Redhat is discontinuing its pay tech support and is not planning on releasing another version of Redhat Linux.

Is Redhat going the way of the dinosaur? It seemed like Redhat had more stuff going for it. Granted, its hard to make money with an open source OS, but their market was picking up (especially in the server arena). Redhat isn't even my favorite distribution but it always seemed like the best version to lead the way of converting from Windows to Linux. I am saddened.

Fedora is the answer. We're running it on a machine here, and it's pretty nice.

Don't worry, RHAT isn't going away. They're just migrating to a business revenue that's more profitable for them.

Hmmm now I have to worry about whether to get Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise at work.

Only for the desktop. You can still by the enterprise desktop version, but it'll cost ya. Fedora Linux is now desktop Redhat. It's still there, but not officially supported.

I feel it's bad because Redhat had brand-name recognition. If you said Redhat, people knew you were talking about Linux. Or GNU-Linux more properly.

I read about the Fedora Linux after I read the info on Redhat's website. It seemed that Fedora is an independent project that isn't after profit (like Mozilla Dev or Openoffice.org projects). This could be a good thing but as Uryoces said: it now lacks the brandname. I think I over-reacted when I saw that Redhat was dropping out and being replaced by a community project.

At least their not dead in the server division. Its nice to see a good server OS without the hefty price tag of Widows Server 2003.

Fedora's errata policy:

Q: What is the errata policy for The Fedora Project?

A: Security updates, bugfix updates, and new feature updates will all be available, through Red Hat and third parties. Updates may be staged (first made available for public qualification, then later for general consumption) when appropriate. In drastic cases, we may remove a package from The Fedora Project if we judge that a necessary security update is too problematic/disruptive to the larger goals of the project. Availability of updates should not be misconstrued as support for anything other than continued development and innovation of the code base.

Red Hat will not be providing an SLA (Service Level Agreement) for resolution times for updates for The Fedora Project. Security updates will take priority. For packages maintained by external parties, Red Hat may respond to security holes by deprecating packages if the external maintainers do not provide updates in a reasonable time. Users who want support, or maintenance according to an SLA, may purchase the appropriate Red Hat Enterprise Linux product for their use.

This is my first post. Yay for me! Personally I use Libranet (debian).

Software maker Novell is buying SUSE Linux.

I guess Novell's got big plans to expand support for Linux while improving the OS. Seeing Linux projects get major support is usually good news.

I wish I was on the inside. With the price of RHAT stock and all. Actually I work for a university helpdesk that wants to start supporting and promoting RH for students.

Plus I read way too much slashdot.
