Isn't there a big folk festival there too?

My sister is a resident of The Ocean State (she was living in West Warwick, recently moved to Cumberland, on the Mass border). On one of my trips up we went to Newport. Nice. Ocean without (too much) beach. I dug that. Also it was very cool to walk around a corner and see The Stars and Stripes berthed there.

I think the music fest your thinking about is the the Newport Jazz Festival, syc.

<-------------Fellow Rhode Island resident.

Newport's pretty nice, bit touristy and I never found the beaches to be all that great but still a cool place.

we actually have a folk festival AND a jazz festival, so you were both right. WAY too touristy. i never go to any of the festivals because any time there's an event in town, i am scheduled to work. i work at a downtown restaurant and it's just insane in there. right now, in winter, i am lucky to make 40.00 on a lunch shift. nights range from 50-80.00, exactly 1/2 of my summer income. and my husband is a painter in the summer and he's struggling to find a job this winter. i wish it wasn't so seasonal, but it really is pretty here in summer, and if you have free time and extra money, it's the place to be.
