Windows 2000 Professional Problem

Hey Dudes

I am having a problem with Windows 2000 Professional and I was wondering if anyone had any idea's, Ive got one idea, but I dont want to go there unless there is another way.

For about 3 weeks, i boot up Win2K and everytime I connect to the internet, every time I try to delete something or rename something or try to access anything on the sub menu when you right click on a icon, my computer totally pauses up and i have to run task manager, shut down explorer and restart it back up. It still has the problem, but I can do anything else, just dont do that. It only seems to affect me when I access the Internet. I think it might be a virus but my virus program, Norton SystemWorks 2003 is up to date and does not find anything. So it is to my conclusion that it is a stuffup with Windows 2000 and needs re-installing. But I was hoping there was another way to get around it....so ideas would be appreciative

First, I'd remove everything from your startup (startup group and registry) and reboot, and see if that solves the problem. If you have a copy of Windows XP, you can snag the file MSCONFIG.EXE from it, and run that, and use the Startup tab to make life easier. If the problem goes away, try turning things back on one by one until the culprit is found.

If that doesn't help, I'd try uninstalling any programs which have added to your right-click menu (programs like WinZIP), and see if that helps. And obviously, if you just barely installed something before the problem appeared, uninstall it.

You might also run a Windows repair... reboot with the Windows 2K CD in the drive, and when it runs setup, select the option to repair the existing installation. That can sometimes fix that kind of stuff.

It sounds like you've got a corrupted profile and perhaps some spyware. Login under the admin account. rename the old profile to something else, then login with your normal logon and it will create a new profile. Then you copy over your favorites, startup menu items, favorites, etc.

After that install spybot (free), update it, and run it. Make sure you immunize yourself and do a full scan. My guess is that will clear up the problem.

Re-Installs are the very last thing you do.

Did I mention I'm a MCSE?
