racism

so, are you americanos feeling it down there? are there ignorant incedents where arab-americans are ruthlessly discriminated against simply for their origins/background? some of that is happening up here in canada and that's just terrible... an event like this really tests how multi-cultural a community really is and i think it's emerging that canada isn't nearly as tolerant as various champions would like to think it is.

i am particularly disturbed at the media manipulation going on... many of you have surely seen footage of celebrating palestinians... well this may come as no suprise to some of you, but at least once piece of footage they've been showing is -stock footage- from 1991 when iraq invaded kuwait.

here's a link to that specific item. debunk as you will...

http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?...&group=webcast

anyhow, if i could send one message on the topic it would be this: be tolerant. don't hate arabs. why was the WTC destroyed? because of hate... hate begets hate, but you have to stop the cycle some time. i'm not saying love everyone... instead, i am saying treat everyone individually.

I posted this on the topic of Afghan Web originally, but there were some horrible incidents in Chicago on Wednesday night. As of last night, there had been a handful of incidents here in Philadelphia, including one involving an off-duty police officer from the city. Chicago and Philadelphia both have large Muslim communities. I also pulled this story from today's Chicago Tribune.

My friend who lives in Toronto dispelled my original notion of Canada (a friendly, inviting place) when she came to visit in May. She said Canada wasn't friendly, just polite. At the time though, the discussion had nothing to do with racism. However, what you are saying kz is disturbing. I have always thought Canada to be ahead of us in the realm of racial harmony.

While this news footage being doctored wouldn't surprise me, I would not be surprised if some Palestinians WERE celebrating. On the other hand, I can say myself that I am overly surprised at the outpouring of emotion from outside the US. I really didn't think it would affect so many people so deeply.

ok it should be noted, first of all, that the link i provided to indymedia seems to be blatant anti-americanism... i really should have looked into it further, as it appears they have no solid proof aside from an account from some guy who may or may not be some kind of professor down in brazil. whatever.

as for up north here... i don't live in america so i can't compare, but there sure is a big mix of cultures here, and they -seem- to get along. i suppose its just these sorts of events that cause the hatred to seep out from under the crack of the closet door it had all been shoved into. i heard rumour of a mosque being destroyed in montreal, and one was firebombed in st catherines [near the US border with new york] but haven't seen any news reports so these items can't be substantiated.

i encourage you all to stamp out racist acts if you see them occuring on the street! we can't let hate turn into more hatred..

I pulled this from the CBC website. It's about a Muslim woman in Saskatchewan and what was going through her mind on Tuesday and Wednesday. It's sad, really.

Its been pretty quiet here, some idiot kicked a couple of muslim owmen off a tram, that got front page. Its mostly because currantly we are recieveing alot of afgan refugees (see the tampa thread) at the moment and people are saying that they won't wnat them here because even though they are REFUGEES OF THE TALIBAN REGIME they are obviously going to grab the nearest plane and plunge it into the Rialto.

Welp, my experiences with Canada are that Ottawa and Toronto were pretty pleasant and friendly and interesting, and Montreal was unfriendly. It was very interesting but the anti-English-speaking cabal there doesn't seem to get the connection between the tourists and their money. And my high school French was just bad enough to be irritating to them, so it seemed.

oh yes, montreal... once the bustling economic capital of canada, now some lonely backwater all because they refuse to play ball in a world where english is the language of business. i was born there, and my family was essentially chased out by seperatists. any time i go back i am reminded of why i don't like the city much -- they really do make it as tough as possible to do anything or get around if you dont speak french [and i still don't]. what's worse is that road signs, product packaging, and whatever else has to be BILINGUAL all across canada, but in quebec it can be french only. have LE FUN.
