Indian Ocean Tsunami

I've been completely awed and overwhelmed by the December 26th earthquake and subsequent tsunami, the devastation of which has filled the news for more than two weeks, now. I've seen some unbelieveable video, and heard countless first-hand accounts, but *nothing* has demonstrated to me the inconceivable power of this event like the pictures and info found at this NASA site.

Satellite photos here show a Sumatran town in Aceh Province in 2003, and three days after the event. Text on an associated page states that the wave that struck here may have been in excess of 150 meters when it struck. Incredible destruction. Unfathomable loss of life and property. The area is utterly scoured clean save for the only substantial structure, a mosque. The entire beach of this apparently once-beautiful penninsula is *gone*...simply vanished. What looked to have been a modest, narrow inlet prior to the tsunami is a gouged out cove afterward. The lush green trees that covered the area are vanished, replaced by what must be a festering, stinking mud flat.

Stunning. I truly cannot wrap my mind around this event. And these pictures show only *one small area* affected by this monster. My Gods.
