MMM... Saxamaphone

I did a photo shoot yesterday with Aubrey Dunham. Some of them came out pretty good.

The third one is by far my favorite. That tree is awesome.

i'm digging the tree one as well. photoshop out the powerlines and you got a winner there.

straighten up the 5th from the end and lighten up the background a touch and you'll have yourself a winner. It captures a very different less PRish mood. 3rd is too busy. What are you shooting with? If you've got the raw files or film you should be able to play a fair bit without losing quality. Always amazed by how much play you can get out of a RAW file, particularly from the MF backs.

I like the 5th from the top, with the cowboy hat in front of the plate glass. Nice contrast. If you could remove the deep shadows under the arms and lighten the shadows to bring out the face, it would be a cool picture.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm still working on composition (Do not ignore the background!) before concentrating on the more technical aspects.

My own observations, besides what was mentioned before:

1) A good portrait, could have been framed better so as not to cut off his foot.

2) Backlit subjects are tricky, this one indeed needs more front light on the subject. And I would prefer that the barbed-wire fence wasn't there.

3) Intruiging, but admittedly a bit busy. The only thing I would do to improve it would be to have him hold the sax at a slightly different angle, so you could see the mouthpiece.

4) Aubrey's personal favorite, but the building in the bottom left kinda messes it up for me.

5) Sunlight way too harsh. A few more minutes later into the sunset and this could have been a great shot.

6) Again harsh lighting, but the effects are cool. A better shooting angle would help.

7) My favorite too, UT. Photoshop out the two white boxes on the left and it's going in the CD.

8) 'Slice of Life' shot. Ignore it.

9) I like this one too, but again a different angle, taking the background more into account, would have really made a difference.

Oh well, shoot and learn. Again, thanks for the critiques, folks.

Nothing an application of Adobe Building Be Gone, can't handle.
I suspect you'll never take a picture you can't find something wrong with. You have a discerning eye and penchent for perfection. Definitely you're own biggest critic.

I really like #2 ... but then I have this thing for fringe.

3 is cool, and 4 is an awesome shot too!

The shadowing on #9 is totally neat, but I think it would be cooler if you could bring up his face some more ...

You are absolutely right about that, Bruce. And just so you know the word is spelled penchant.

Nice shooting, I like the first one. More importantly, you've made the man look like a player, what's he sound like?
