apt-get for Red Hat/RPM based distributions
Everyone should switch to RedHat 7.2 right now. I just found (and am installing packages with!) apt for Red Hat. apt = A Package Tool and is the basis for Debian's awesome distro. Well, now apt handles RPM's through a port. You can find the RPM here:
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/freshr...rh7x.i386.html For Red Hat 7.x machines. Install that, then do this: apt-get update and then you can apt-get install away! Try apt-get install bitchx to install BitchX and its dependencies. Nice, eh? Very very cool. ![]() Anyway. I recommend this for those wanting to try it out - it's definitely working nice for me, and right now I feel I have the best of both worlds - Red Hat w/SMP, plus Debian's apt utility. Very cool. |

The only thing that keeps me with Debian is apt-get. So, if apt-get works with Redhat as well as it does in Debian, i'm sold.
And if it does work as well, then it should definitely go into the main distribution. |

Well, you know how big of a fan of Debian I am. Personally, I prefer their filesystem layout as well, but Red Hat's is pretty alright. Anyway, I am definitely very very impressed. Since I'm setting up this new box still, there was a lot I needed to install - and I've been apt-getting it now.
Jaggy - Probably. Definitely worth a shot (I giggled with delight as it downloaded and installed BitchX for me last night). I think it would probably work. One thing to note is that the integration of apt with Debian is superior to anything on the RPM side - it's not as good, but it's pretty close. For instance, in Debian, if you do an apt-get install ircd it will download, install and start the ircd daemon. In Red Hat, I do believe you'll need to start the daemon yourself. But that's a minor problem. I'm definitely very excited about this. |
