O.M.G. I'm really amazed that she couldn't find a better answer than 'ummmm...'.
It's really quite disappointing as a woman to know that nothing has really changed as far as beauty pagents are concerned. I suppose on the other hand though, there are some pretty smart cookies out there too. It really sux that some women have so many gifts, and some of us have so few.

Rkzenrage, I think you have a great point and then with the fact that most world events revolve around the US just adds to that. And maybe America's lack of interest in world events hurt as well.

The reason American kids don't know their geography is that you guys decided to have a 'quiet' Empire instead of an overt one :P During the hey-day of the British Empire (and even into the 50s) British Schoolchildren were bombarded with maps and globes showing the extent of British influence/power. It was part of the Imperial doctrination that our schoolchildren were routinely treated to.

Most likely she knew her answer was embarrassing. But she also displayed what is required in her position. Pretend it was a good answer. She did not admit in stature what she probably knew was a bad answer. That is what she is supposed to do.

not only that, but she did it without the tiniest flicker of emotion. She did you proud, man.

By emotion, if you mean meltdown, well, she displayed emotion. Maybe described as defiant. Unlike children, she did not let her emotion makes her decisions. Whereas those who are children might have let emotions create panic, hear things that don't exist, or some other childish response. Instead, she subserviented her emotions to portray the necessary image. That’s what adults do – use emotion as a tool. Not used emotions to make decisions. Her image for those who need to see messages in emotions, if I recall, had her hands on her hips. Defiant.

I'm not looking down my nose at her (in particular). I think the whole idea of beauty contests is ridiculous. Even more so when they try and make them out to be more than they are.
Very few of the women in those competitions are 'complete' women even though that's what they're marketed as.
