You're surprised? Any time under any circumstances an officer shoots someone, he is administratively taken off duty while the whole thing is investigated for its rights and wrongs. It also cools things off for everybody, not least the officer. Who does get paid, and likely gets mandatory counseling too. Not quite a vacation. Damn few who've ever shot anybody claimed it was.
