The thing to remember about heat over here, aside from the fact we're just not used to it as a nation and therefore most homes and even businesses don't have air conditioning, is that it is a very humid heat.

I remember going to the south of France when I was a kid, when they were in the middle of a really bad drought. It was baking hot, but it didn't make me feel ill like it did/does here when it gets hot.

I went to the bakery around 12:30 and it was just too much. Had to spy my moment when there was a bit of a breeze to take Carrotchops out. Poor lamb. Even with his fur shaved almost to the skin, he's still too hot.

The electric fan has been pulling double shifts and I've been moving it around from room to room as I go :P

I did have a few really bad days eczema-wise from the heat, but *touch wood* it seems not to be building to anything nasty. Hopefully. I mainly stay indoors with the window open and the fan going, other than the obligatory dog walks, shop trips and the *coughs* FOUR FUCKING HOURS spent on superheated buses yesterday going to and from the dentists in Leeds.

Someone asked me how I was the other day. I said, I'm fine....too hot though :p They're like: can't complain about the heat now, not after the winter we've just had.

I thought....yeah, ok, but it's really no fun for the likes of me :p Until evening. Late evening, when the temperature drops a touch, but it's still light in the sky and there's a barbeque on the go, or I'm strolling quietly round the village with mah homedog. That's lovely.

Getting up at the crack of dawn to walk Carrot before the heat sets, in not so much.

The heat index is a way to account for this combination of heat and humidity.

In Fahrenheit

In Metric

According to Wunderground, right now in London, it's the early afternoon, and the temperature is 82 degrees F and the heat index is 82 degrees F. In Arlington VA right now, it's mid morning and the temperature is 87 degrees F and the heat index is 100 degrees F.

Admittedly, I'm sitting in air conditioning right now, but my morning commute was pretty gross, walking to the subway station.
