IotD "blogview" "content repurposing"
Over the years I've had a number of requests for people to be able to use Image of the Day differently.
So I created this different view of the same stuff: http://cellar.org/iotd.php This view is more like a typical "web log" (or "blog"), an approach to the web that's getting popular. It's not really done, but I'm releasing it on the world anyway, because why wait? Part of the concept is that I think it will be easier to get links from the rest of the world for this, than for the Cellar itself or for the IotD section of the vBulletin-style Cellar. Interestingly, it is just a minor edit to make this format available for any forum. |

Cellar IotD weblog edition doesn't include the Post Subject headings of the respondents.
This changes things a little bit for the posters in the Cellar's Image of the Day thread, whose writings are re-purposed in the other format without the subject heading of the replies. That's probably not a huge point, but care should be taken in the IotD thread not to include any contextually relevant message in the Post Subject headings, that will be missing in the weblog version. |

He's right, The Tone - there should still be a "subject" there. 'cause sometimes that's an important part of the message.

Constructive editorial comments
Tony,
A few observations, and friendly advice: In the nav column: Most recent entry (permanent link) should say: Permalink This Image [because it's not the most recent entry when you click on any of the Last seven entries] and: Last seven entries should say: Recent Images [because they're not really the last seven, but the seven previous to the most recent IotD, which depending on your schedule might not be today's image, depending on when the page is accessed. It might be yesterday's IotD and the date line makes that clear. And entries gives the incorrect impression that these are submissions by the users.] IotD stuff should be IotD Stuff if you agree with the notes above. For what it's worth, my 2 cents are in Canadian dollars! ... and as you control the main thread titles in IotD, you might want to keep 'em short so they don't run on two lines in this nav column, which gets a bit messy. ![]() Last edited by Nic Name; 06-30-2002 at 08:59 PM. |

I'm digging it UT...it's really giving me a good vibe.
*turns off new age b.s.* Seriously though, I like it, and agree with Nic and Dave's comments. |

Syc, now try this link.
http://cellar.org/syc.php Thus, insta-blog: create a blog out of any forum. This is not the typical blog format, which would be more like post after post by the same person, with a separate link for comments. But it gets the job done. I could hack in the date in the left-hand navigation... I just didn't have to with IotD, since I already post the date in the subject every time. |

Sorry 'bout that, but I misunderstood how that worked when I gave my thoughts above.
I thought that when the reader clicked on one of the Recent Images, that its link would appear in the section above where it says Permalink This Image ... I see now that is not the way it works, and I don't know whether it could or should ... but it's still a bit unclear what Permalink This Image means when the reader has switched to a different image. hmmmm... |

Well, the way it's generally meant to be consumed is that someone links to the top page, which contains the latest image. The latest image needs a link somewhere that people can use to get to it when it's NOT the latest image.
Permalink Latest Image. |

Pretty damn cool.
One suggestion, how bout "Next" and "Previous" buttons for the images/discussions? So it just puts you at the next image in order?

It's a good idea, but I'm not sure I can fit them in with the current design. What should be more useful is the archive, once I have a chance to think it out.

Well, first you (or Dave or Juju) have to tell me that you definitely want the thing! It's only a test until you do.

It's pretty cool, but I think I like the old format better for my journal.
If one of them wants it, you might want to make it so that the image at the top of the page doesn't say, 'Image of the Day'. :) |
